Career prospects

The aim of these master programs is to form engineers and scientists with firm basic knowledge in the field of photonics and with the skills to apply this knowledge to the design, realisation and the management of photonic systems for a broad range of application domains.

Furthermore the students will have the opportunity to broaden their knowledge and skills in other domains, such as ICT, biosciences, physics and chemistry of materials, industrial management etc.

Therefore graduates are expected to go on to a broad range of future opportunities, including:

  • Research in high-technology companies, in particular photonics-related companies
  • Research in academic laboratories and research institutes (possibly in PhD context)
  • Development of new photonic products in industry
  • Technical support in a company for its products or services
  • Technical marketing and sales

Short stories from a few of our alumni:

Natasha Lopes

Previous education: Bachelor in Electrical Engineering, Goa, India

Current position: Scientific responsible /Industrial PhD, PAJ Systemteknik, Denmark

"The knowledge provided by the Photonics Master helped me to build a new dimension of the world in Photonics. The knowledge is state of the art, the mobility and the fact of the dual master boosted my chances of getting a job. The universities are one of the best in Europe and the level of education is extremely good."

Abdul Shakoor

Previous Education: Bachelors of Engineering in Avionics

Current Position: PhD student at Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in Quantum Optics/Information group

"EMMP has excellent combination of courses and laboratory work which covers almost all important aspects of photonics. It provided sound knowledge of photonics and experimental skills which acted as a base to help me to decide the more specific area of photonics in which I am now pursuing the PhD and research. The knowledge and skills acquired during this master program is equally good for seeking jobs in photonics industry. The most distinguishing feature of EMMP was that it gave an opportunity to study in different universities across Europe and work in different research groups which provided a good exposure of hot photonic research areas and helped me a lot in seeking good PhD fellowship."

Rahul Singh

Previous education: Bachelor in Electronics and Telecommunication, SGGS Nanded, Maharashtra, India

Former position: Systems Designer, Ericsson AB, Sweden.

"Ericsson was looking for someone, to help them in advancing their technology, and fight future competitions, given the frequently changing technology in communications market. Seeing my profile as a International masters in Photonics, they thought they found the right person. This masters provides a broad base in Optical Physics and related technology, which can be built upon into various interdisciplinary fields."

Current position: PhD at GSI, Darmstadt

Abhinav Rohit

Previous education: Bachelor of Technology in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU), Lucknow, INDIA

Current position: PhD, TU Eindhoven, The Netherlands

"Even though it was the very first year for EMMP, It was exceptionally very managed and it can only get better with each passing year. Before I joined EMMP I had a very limited knowledge in the field of Photonics. But after two years of extensive coursework, interesting Lab work and availability of expert guidance at all the participating Universities, I can proudly say that I am at par with any photonics graduate in the world. Apart from the education, I would thank the European Commision for providing me an opportunity to experience the European culture and also for the generous scholarship which made our stay in Europe a lot comfortable. The knowledge, exposure and confidence I gained in the two years of EMMP will always help me in my career."

Saurabh Singh

Previous education: Bachelor in Electronics and Communication Engineering, Dharmsinh Desai University, Nadiad, India

Current Position: Application and Business Support Engineer, ASML, The Netherlands.

"Erasmus Mundus Master in Photonics provided me the international exposure and the knowledge needed to work in a photonics company. The program curriculum provides a rigorous foundation in photonics. I am working in an optical lithography company and the knowledge acquired during the program is valuable for my work. It also prepared me for international assignments which are a norm in companies through mobility involved in the studies."
