Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Studying in Brussels...the capital of Europe
Brussels is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. It is officially bilingual (French and Dutch), although it boasts an astonishing variety of cultures, styles and nationalities: 31% of its population is of foreign origin, and this makes for a unique atmosphere in which cultures interact easily with one another. English is widely spoken in Brussels!
Studying at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel ( VUB)
The VUB is an independent university since 1970 but has an old tradition as it is the offshoot of the French-speaking Université Libre de Bruxelles ( ULB) that was founded in 1834.
The VUB currently has 8860 students in all traditional academic disciplines , including medicine, law and engineering. It offers over 130 study courses, of which 25 are taught in English.
Photonics at the VUB
The VUB has a longstanding tradition in photonics research and education. Today it offers- together with Ghent University- a bilingual ( Dutch-English ) Interuniversity Master of Science in Photonics Engineering , closely associated to this Erasmus Mundus programme. It has become a center of reference e.g for semiconductor laserdynamics, micro-optics , microstructured fibers for sensing, optical interconnects, IR and mm wave photonics and serves the Flemish industry as a consultant in a great variety of projects
